The language Frozen - a very short history - in English and Spanish

The sidewalk around the garage was filled with stalactites of ice broke the ice, long and heavy, frozen once at the edge of the roof of the garage. I was only eleven years old when, back in the winter of 1958, and I felt cold metal or iron, would a person speaking on the surface, not just glance to freeze. I was born with a curious character, in fact, and it was very interesting, but not shown to me. So, of all things, I put my tongue on the doorknob, it must bewas five below zero out. It froze on it, faster than I could spit.

I began to pull, or try to pull off, but my tongue would not be separated from the metal stud, and so I stood there, like The Hunchback of Notre Dame, crouching almost to his knees, praying my brother Mike, soon to be come along and save the day (I needed any more proof, it worked).

As I stayed in that position for centuries, it seems, this raised the question, my brother Mike would certainlyquestions: "Why ... would anyone do something so stupid like this?"

I mean it was bad weather, a Minnesota winter is nothing to laugh, because it is a lasting experience, every year.

I had no answer, "to see if it worked."

When my brother came and said, "Do not you have better things to do," a rhetorical question, of course.

Part 2 - How to read your way in a foreign language fluently in 30 days or less

Start reading your way of foreign language

In this second part, we are now more precise details of what you have to do to effectively read your way in a foreign language fluently in 30 days or less. Online and print out a real newspaper, if available in your target language, it was a good start.

Read the newspaper Aloud

Get a newspaper in the target language, in our example the Spanish case. Read articles fromlight - days. Do this for at least an hour a day in sessions of 15 minutes or 30 minutes if necessary. If your schedule allows you more time, 90 minutes or a few hours or so to read every day, do it if you can. Remember that you only keep for 30 days. Start by reading aloud a short article or an advertisement and be sure to include yourself. You can use the recording later to prove to yourself that this technique actually works. Eyes, it really works and it works quite well as a fact. Just be sure to read every day, without fail, for the entire period of 30 days. Take yourself (digital or tape) no more than once at the end of each week. When your 30-day period is over, get to the end of the month. Now listen to the first image you made yourself and then compare with your last shot. After listening and comparing the two, feel free to smile like a Cheshire catPat yourself on the back generously as much as you want. You deserve it.

Get where the reading material

If you happen to live in a place where Spanish or your target foreign language newspapers are not available, do not worry. Just go online and dig up one or two. For Spanish as a second or foreign language, here are some Spanish newspapers online to get started:

An interesting exercise, fun and informative

This can really be a fun and informative exercise when done regularly, if your foreign language skills to grow almost daily. Not only will your Spanish or otherforeign language vocabulary, pronunciation and communication skills sky rocket, but you can develop a deep knowledge of foreign language in context, along with geography, culture and elements of lifestyle, even if we focus on a particular country. English As A Foreign Language - Reading Is FUN-Damental

English as a Foreign Language Teachers and Learners:

Did you know that Wednesday, April 23, 2008 is a national day for books and reading? Some places also call it "Language Day" or give tribute to England's William Shakespeare and Spain's Miguel Cervantes. Both writers, while born in different years, reputedly died on the same day in the year 1616.

In conjunction with a day for honoring, or at least remembering, two of literature's most auspicious contributors, I thought I'd take the opportunity to divulge some recent statistics on reading published in Colombia. Some of them I found to be quite appalling. What is it like in the country where YOU live and teach?

Reading in Colombia

In a study done in 2005, Colombians read an average of only 1.5 (one point five) books per year! When polled as to why so few, technology and the internet were primarily cited as reasons most never cracked open a book. Television also bore a brunt of the blame for non-readers.

Back in the year 2000 however, the average number of books read was "up" to 2.4 (two point four) books per year in Colombia. This is still far below anything I read about before.
Incredulous, I polled hundreds of my EFL learners and fellow ELT teachers.

"How many books did you have to read during your college or university years? I asked.

For me in the USA, most college majors required somewhere in the neighborhood of 400 or more books to be read and / or referenced during a four-year sojourn. Many Colombian colleagues and students cited approximately 20 - that's right, twenty, books to be read during a five-year undergraduate program!

A Five-Year Periodic Study

Here are some more interesting statistics from the "Study of Reading Habits, Library Attendance Book Consumption in Colombia" (2005) which is conducted every five years. The next scheduled study is set for the year 2010.

22% of Colombians say they have NO books in their home in contrast with

4.1% of Mexicans who say they have NO books in their home

7.7 % of Colombians said they have more than 100 books at home in contrast with

24.6% of Mexicans who said that they have more than 100 books at home

41% of Colombians older than 12 prefer reading books

26% prefer reading magazines and

32% prefer to read newspapers and other periodicals

79.7% of children and youths said that they read despite of the accessibility of technology and television

Colombian Cities Hosting Special Celebrations

There are 27 Colombian cities and municipalities reportedly hosting celebrations and special events today or during this week. These include the following as reported in "El Tiempo" newspaper, April 20, 2008.

The cities are: Armenia, Rio Hacha, Barranquilla, Buenaventura, Bogota, Bucaramanga, Ipiales, Leticia, Cali, San Andres,Cartagena, Santa Marta, Cucuta, Sincelejo, Ibagué, Valledupar, Manizales, Florencia, Medellín, Girardot, Neiva, Monteria, Pereira, Villavicencio, Popayán, Tunja and Pasto.

If your area has any recognition of this day why not encourage your EFL learners to participate. If not, then why not prepare some activities for your English language learners?
English language teachers and Parents: If YOU don't read, then your learners and children won't see the value in developing this habit and skill. You need to set the example as well as helping them to develop reading for pleasure and reading comprehension skills.

And me? I read ten non-academic books over the end-of-the-year holiday break last December to January. But then, I like to read.

Let's Get Started Reading Your Way to Foreign Language Fluency

In this, part two, we now get into more precise details of what you'll need to do in order to effectively read your way to foreign language fluency in 30 days or less. Either online or an actual printed newspaper, if available in your target foreign language, will get you started nicely.

After listening to and comparing both, feel free to grin like a Cheshire cat and generously pat yourself on the back as much as you'd like. You deserve it.
